Rwanda

In Rwanda, ‘Jewish’ has mysteriously ended up becoming shorthand for ‘Tutsi’. According to some historians and Tutsi scholars, the group originally came to Rwanda from Ethiopia in the 15th century. Although played down by the current government, the belief persists. To Tutsi’s, the genealogical lineage to Ethiopia connects them to a greater constellation including ancient Hebrews.

Genealogical proof of Tutsi descent from Israelites is impossible to find, but among the diaspora, survivors, and even at times the government, the association to ancient Abyssnia is common.

Apart from the Tutsi’s, there are others Jews living in Rwanda. These include Josh Ruxin, who is responsible for implementing massive changes to health care in region. His wife, Alissa owns a restaurant and bed and breakfast called ‘Heaven’. The Ruxins and their family, are the hub of Jewish activity in Rwanda and attract a large number of other Jews involved in poverty reduction. Rwanda is also a popular Israeli tourist destination with at least 100 Israeli travelers a day visiting the country.
