Little is known about the history of Jews in St Barthélemy. It is believed that there were Jews on the island. However, it was not until 2015 that a rabbi was appointed and a place of worship was established to build a sense of community for Jews living in St Barthélemy.
Jewish St Barthélemy is a warm and welcoming community in Gustavia, for locals and visitors to spread traditional Jewish values in a warm and welcoming environment for all.
Algerian-born Erick Struk ended up in St Barthélemy. He and his wife, Anna, who was born in Morocco, opened a store called Laurent Eiffel in the capital port town of Gustavia.
It is the only one in the harbor with a mezuzah, a small case containing a scroll of parchment that is nailed to the door post as a reminder of G-d’s presence and commandments.
When Mr. and Mrs. Struk were preparing the circumcision for their first born son, prior to the appointment of the rabbi, they did not even expect to have a minyan. To their surprise about 50 to 60 people showed up, most of whom were Jewish.
